LeeAnn reached out and grabbed his hand, squeezing for support. It helped to keep him grounded as they walked away from Anthony and his son, Everett. It was a complete shock that the cute little boy with the chubby cheeks was named after him. He got the feeling that even with their separation, Anthony had been thinking of him.

That’s a good sign, right?

“I know you don’t want to talk about Anthony, and I’ve been trying to respect your wishes, but I’m your friend.” LeeAnn pulled him down a side alley. She turned on him, pushing his back against the brick wall. “What are you doing?”

“He has a son.”

“I know. I figured that out on my own.” She shook her head.

“I’m his mate.”

“Jim,” she sighed. “I didn’t really know you when you were with Anthony. We worked together, but we weren’t as close as we are now. I was there when you were too weak to get out of bed. I was there when you were crying hysterically. I was there through it all.” She paused for a moment as if remembering all of Jim’s emotional turmoil. “I just want you to think about this. I don’t want to see you hurting.”

“I never thought I would see Anthony again. I never thought he would walk back into my life. I didn’t think we would have a second chance. Trust me.” Jim smiled. “I’ve been thinking about this a lot.”

“I’m just worried about you,” LeeAnn told him.

Jim could hear the sincerity in her voice. “I know.”

It was true. LeeAnn had been by his side through the emotional storm that threatened to swallow him whole. It was the turning point in their relationship. Anthony leaving brought LeeAnn into his life. They’d been co-workers at the law firm, Bloom and Bear, but when Jim stopped going to work and didn’t call in, LeeAnn took it upon herself to drag his ass out of bed.

“I want you to get your happily ever after. I want you to be happy and in love. That’s all I’ve ever wanted for you.”

“You’re a good friend.”

“I just want you to be sure. Jump in with both feet if you have to, but keep your eyes open.”

“I will. I promise.”

“That’s all I can ask.” She shrugged her shoulders.

Chuckling, Jim wrapped his arms around LeeAnn and gave her a hug. He was glad to have such a good friend. Jim understood her concerns. She’d been by his side at his worst and she didn’t want that to happen again. Hell, he didn’t want it to happen either. But Jim would never be able to walk away. He couldn’t say good-bye to Anthony. It was impossible to think that was ever even an option. There was too much history and far too much love.

Even after the long separation, the butterflies still fluttered in his stomach whenever Anthony was near.

“So.” LeeAnn pulled back, a serious look on her face. “What are you going to wear?”

“Jeans and a T-shirt.” He shrugged. Did it matter?

“This is your first official date in years.
